Why give away the crown jewels
Because a receipt you have to pay for is a receipt people ration — and a signature that only exists on important messages quietly teaches everyone that unsigned messages are normal. The entire value of attestation is that it is ambient: present on the throwaway "lol" exactly as on the contract approval, so its absence…
The maths we ran
Attestation is cheap for us: a signature and a batched anchor to Rekor, amortised across thousands of messages. What we were charging was not covering a cost; it was a tax on verification. Deleting the line item costs us very little and removes the one reason not to verify.
What to do with it
Nothing to turn on. Send a message in any ordinary conversation, open its menu, and choose Proof of Send — you will get a shareable receipt anchored to a public log. Or paste any proof into /verify and watch it check out without a login.
